NFL Betting 2010-11: Back Brett Favre and the Vikings for Superbowl glory

NFL Betting 2010-11: Back Brett Favre and the Vikings for Superbowl glory

As the clock wound down in last January's NFC Championship game it looked like Brett Favre was leading his team to the Superbowl. But a late penalty and disastrous interception changed everything. One of the greatest of all time was never going to go out like that...

We move forward seven months and to no-one's surprise old #4 is back and ready to have one last go at the big one. He returns to the Minnesota Vikings knowing that his team is a legitimate contender in a stacked NFC.

The Vikings may just have more attacking weapons than anyone else in the NFC. A strong offensive line gave Favre all the time he wanted last year to find his wide receivers. Teams couldn't drop their linebackers back to help in coverage though as Adrian Peterson was the best running back in the league. They had everything and everyone is returning for this campaign.

And not much has changed on the defensive side of the ball. The unit is a year older and a year wiser. They know deep down this is it. Favre is retiring after this season (and I do think he means it) and whoever they bring in to replace the great man will not be a Hall of Fame Quarterback.

So you have to see the Vikings as real players. They should have won it all last year. That horrific throw may have been the icing on the cake but Peterson could hardly keep hold of the ball and Percy Harvin fumbled late on at a crucial time in the fourth quarter.

The New Orleans Saints won the Superbowl last year but the Vikings were the best team in the league.

The Saints will be strong again this year, and you have to like the look of the Packers should their offensive line gel to gave Aaron Rodgers time in the pocket. Of course, with the Superbowl being in Dallas this year, the pressure is well and truly on the Cowboys to become the first team to win a Superbowl on home turf.

However, for me, if the Vikings stay healthy then they are still the best team on paper and at 15.0 on the markets they should be backed.

Recommended Bet: Back the Minnesota Vikings to win the Superbowl at 12.0 or above.

Detroit Lions 2010: NFL Schedule and Superbowl 2011 Odds

The Detroit Lions have won 2 games in 3 years and will have a hard time building confidence for the 2010 NFL schedule as they have a tough slate of games to begin the year beginning at the Chicago Bears on September 12th against a Bears team motivated to get back into the playoffs. The Philadelphia Eagles will visit Detroit on September 19th before the Lions travel to Minnesota to face Brett Favre and the Vikings on September 26th in a NFL betting match-up with one of the online sportsbook favorites to win the NFC. Then it’s on to face the Green Bay Packers on October 3rd for another tough division road game against a leading conference contender. Online sportsbooks have the Lions 100-1 longshots in 2011 Superbowl odds to win the championship, 45-1 to win the NFC conference and have an over/under regular season win total of 5 OVER (-145).

The Lions finally get a winnable game in NFL odds on October 10th when they host the St. Louis Rams. Detroit will be at the New York Giants on October 17th before a week 7 bye on the 2010 NFL schedule. The Washington Redskins visits Detroit on Halloween followed by a visit by the New York Jets on November 7th. The Lions hit the road for their next two games starting with a November 14th date at the Buffalo Bills and then a November 21st game at Cowboys Stadium against a Dallas Cowboys team that should be a prohibitive favorite at online sportsbooks. Bet the 2010 Detroit Lions as 100-1 longshots in 2011 Superbowl odds with up to a $250 deposit bonus.

Detroit will play the traditional Thanksgiving Day game vs the New England Patriots on November 25th followed by a rematch with the Bears at Detroit on December 5th. The final quarter of the season begins with a third consecutive home game on December 12th against the Packers. Detroit then travels to Tampa Bay for a winnable game against the Buccaneers on December 19th. The Lions will stay in Florida for a December 26th match-up at the Miami Dolphins and then play the 2010 NFL schedule finale at home against the Vikings on January 2nd. Could We Be Seeing an In-State Super Bowl This Season?

Could We Be Seeing an In-State Super Bowl This Season?

Amazingly in a span of about 43 years, there have only been 2 in-state Super Bowls, going all the way back to Super Bowl 1 in 1967.

Since then, only the Buffalo Bills vs. New York Giants in 1991 and the San Francisco 49ers vs San Diego Chargers in 1995 has happened.

There are currently 9 possible scenarios in which we could end up watching an in-state Super Bowl in 2011.

The question here is, of those, which one is the most likely to be a reality? I’ve calculated rosters, divisions, odds and surprise factors to come up with an answer.

First, in no particular order, here are all the possibilities:

1. Buffalo Bills vs New York Giants
2. Miami Dolphins vs Tampa Bay Buccaneers
3. New York Jets vs New York Giants
4. Baltimore Ravens vs Washington Redskins
5. PittsburghSteelers vs Philadelphia Eagles
6. Houston Texans vs Dallas Cowboys
7. Jacksonville Jaguars vs Tampa Bay Buccaneers
8. Oakland Raiders vs San Francisco 49ers
9. San Diego Chargers vs San Francisco 49ers

I started with a prediction of what I think the playoff bracket would look like to start eliminating some of these possibilities right off the bat. My playoff picture is as follows:

AFC:

Bye weeks belong to, Baltimore Ravens and Indianapolis Colts followed by the Patriots, the Bengals, the Chargers and the New York Jets.

NFC:

Bye week belongs to the New Orleans Saints and the Dallas Cowboys, followed by the Packers, the 49ers the Redskins, and the Vikings.
